27-04-2011 10:20Food Aid - Will it ever Make a DifferenceSince 1963 to date food aid is distributed to communities in arid and semi -arid areas in Kenya, and i believe it is the same case in other rural African countries. The frequency of droughts have increased from an interval of ten years in 1974 to a two year interval in the year 2000, and today there is no break again. We blame global warming for the change in weather pattens the world over, but whom do we blame for the consistent poverty and hunger in our communities? For how long will food aid continue? Will food aid create {if it has not yet created} a food dependance syndrome? More questions without answers - Do we blame bad government's policies, global warming or lack of necessary skills and knowledge to move forward? Works directly with rural communities for empowerment, livelihood improvement, Peace, Promoting culture and Cultural tourism |

29-06-2011 02:27 Re: Food Aid - Will it ever Make a Difference "The love of money is the root of all evil". This is indeed a true adage according to one of the religious books (the Bible). Food is generally seen as the source of strength, livelihood and life. "An empty bag cannot stand", this again is another old but true proverb. It is unfortunate to see the manner in which our leaders have turn our rights to food into politics. Every citizen in every country has the right to a balanced diet, affordable health facilities etc. Food Aid surely helps making a difference for those who cannot afford due to their economic status, it will also make a difference for those who have the power (resources) to acquire more and use for their selfish political ambitions. However, i am of a conviction that Africans must begin to learn how to grow and or produce their own foods rather than depending on food aid. maybe we can say in a few words instead of giving out fishes, teach them how to fish. ?Most people may not know the power of little things except you take a walk down to Africa and try sleeping in a room filled with mosquitoes?. 01-07-2011 16:40 Re: Food Aid - Will it ever Make a Difference I blame government sometimes as it makes bad policies which does not aid in its efficient distribution of food to the poor. Factors due to inadequate planning and knowledge hinders efficient distribution of food in the economy, and improper storage of food during bumper harvest is also a major factor. Ineffective decisions as to how and what to do to get sufficient food to support its members in the country who are less privileged contributes to less supply of food to the poor. In some developing countries that i know and which i believe is same in most or almost all developing countries, areas where food is grown in large quantities are usually in the villages and the road networks are so poor that transporting food is usually difficult. What this results in is food spoilage hindering it's purpose for which it was planned.
