| my motivation to participate |
 |

The partnership between Suriname and the Netherlands over the years has been fruitful. After Suriname‘s independence in 1975, our partnership was structured through a Treaty. The year 2010 will be the last year of the treaty funds. After that we will have to adopt a new strategy. I want to help to work out the new partnership strategy. Furthermore, I want to assist in identifying viable strategies for local development. I applaud the idea behind the VoiceOver programme. My main motivation to participate is to contribute by communicating recipients‘ experiences to the Netherlands, so that developing countries can achieve tailor-made development cooperation that is beneficial to both parties. Notwithstanding the positive aspects of the development relationship between Suriname and the Netherlands, there is still room for improvement. Key is that we evaluate our relationship in order not to make the same mistakes in the future. Some of the lessons learned that will surely benefit our future collaboration are: - To make further use of stakeholder collaboration especially the contribution of civil society, since this can help government to cope with its capacity problems;- There is a need for inter-donor dialogue and joining of efforts, as this will improve the effectiveness of development efforts. There is a lesson to be learned from the UNs Delivering as One (DaO) strategy, which has had positive results in Suriname. |

The Netherlands is home to approximately 333.500 Surinamers. Taking into account that our total population is about 500.000, this is a lot.
Exact numbers of Surinamese emigrants are unknown. But as we assume that the Netherlands is our primary migrant destination, we derive our emigration figures from Dutch statistics. An issue that I want to work on is improvement of data systems.
Also, between the local and expatriate community there exists much cross-boundary social capital. Remittances contribute strongly to the strengthening of our Balance of Payments.
Adoption of a program aimed at investment of remittances in production would be beneficial to both parties and possibly encourage return-migration. Other local sectors with potential are tourism (e.g. eco & culture); outsourcing (e.g. call centers); gold mining; agriculture and drinking water.
Given that economic growth is the cornerstone of sustainable development, social development is its non-negligible building blocks. The MDGs summarize the basic necessities of civilized co-existence. My main area of expertise regards Goal 8 Development of a Global Partnership for Development. With regard to Suriname, emphasis also has to be placed on eradication of poverty and hunger, reduction of child and maternal mortality and ensuring environmental sustainability. Although there remains room for improvement, the progress with regard to the other MDGs is positive.
