I have an interest in the use of ICTs to facilitate development espescially to provide jobs and help people earn an income. I received my Masters Degree from the Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany in 2002 in Development Management. My thesis was on the infiltration of technology into the educational institutions which I used the University of the Western Cape as a case study. I also worked on a project with the International Maritime Organisation to assess the efficiency and feasibility of their Global Information System which gathered and processed information for 6 countries in 2002. My role was to conduct a participatory analysis of the users and producers of information and to assess the mediums and channels of information communication to determine their effectiveness in reaching the goals of the organization. I then took up the post of SIDSNET Information Officer which was a United Nations Project to promote the use of ICTs to communicate information to promote sustainable development in Small Islands Developing Countries. My role was to facilitate means of information communication and advocate the use of ICTs in the 22 pacific island countries. I moved to South Africa in 2005 to join my husband and have worked with local NGOs in the field of organizational development (Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting) and Resource Mobilisation. In this role I also tried to advocate the use of ICTs but there have been several obstacles that stall the process everytime at decision making level.I am leaving my job with the SA Red Cross Society to start my own business looking at ICTs and online means to continue to facilitate development. I continue to advocate the use or ICTs and this is the reason I would like to be involved in this forum. |

I would like to continue my work in facilitating information for sustainable development hence my interest in the above. On the side, I have started an urban garden really trying to live sustainably through recycling at my home and growing my own vegetable garden. I hope to develop this also some day soon into a business to teach people living in the urban areas how to do the same for themselves whereever they are, whether living in an apartment or living in a house of their own. I would like to work as a business as having worked in the non profit field for a while, I think the best way to facilitate development is through business where people earn money directly to their output and dependency on aid is kept to a minimum. I also wish to include education as it is my belief that life long learning is the only way to develop and to maintain certain standards.In all of these areas, ICTs can play a crucial role to facilitate the end results. |

I believe in self development to facilitate self knowledge. With those come integrity, responsibility and empowerment for us as individuals to be the driver of our own lives and destinies and not depend on others. There are many opportunities available and we must optimize their use and be courageous to step out sometimes into the unknown in order to harness the good those opportunities can bring. |
